A Note From the Associate Pastor
Dear Friends, Spring training for Christians starts early this year. Lent, the forty day period leading up to Easter begins on Ash Wednesday, 2/6. We will gather for worship either at noon or in the evening at 7:30pm, following a light supper at 6:30pm. Both services will be held in the sanctuary and will include the imposition of ashes. From its inception many centuries ago, Lend has been a time of preparation. This was its origin when the season came into existence because the new converts needed training and education in the duties that they were to assume at their baptism and confirmation at Eastertide. Even though we no longer receive new members only at Easter, the church has held to the six weeks of spring training because we know it is need for all of us. What do we need to be better trained and more obedient to serve our Lord Jesus Christ? What we do during Lent, the discipline we undertake, ought to be understood in that context. This year, on Wednesday evenings, we will look at some themes, Christian practices or traditions that we ho-pe will deepen our life together, five us a practical strategy for spiritual growth and articulate a balanced vision of life and faith. Once again, we invite you to join together on Wednesdays for a light supper at 6:30pm followed by a time of study and discussion at 7:15pm. On Sunday mornings, Jesus' Prayer and Ours, the prayer our Lord taught us, will be our theme through the Lenten season. So, let us keep Lent so we can grow together and be prepared for the glad Easter morn. As the hymn writer put it: Throughout these Lenten days and nights we turn to walk the inward way, where, meeting Christ, our guide and light, we live in hope till Easter day. The pilgrim Christ, the Lamb of God, who found in weakness greater power, embraces us though lost and flawed, and leads us to his rising hour. So let us choose the path of one who wore for us the crown of thorn, and slept in death the we might wake to life on Resurrection morn! In anticipation, Jim Rev. James A. Neevel |
